Ryan Hurst Cast As Kratos In Prime Video’s ‘God of War’

Ryan Hurst Cast as Kratos in Prime Video’s God of War Series

Prime Video has officially found its Kratos. In a major casting announcement for the upcoming God of War live-action series, actor Ryan Hurst has been tapped to portray the iconic Spartan warrior at the center of the beloved video game franchise.

Hurst, known for standout roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead, will carry one of gaming’s most notorious and physically demanding roles into the realm of television. The series, produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in collaboration with PlayStation Productions, marks a big step in bringing the critically acclaimed PlayStation game franchise to life on the small screen.

Interestingly, Hurst isn’t new to the God of War universe. He previously voiced and performed as Thor in the hit 2022 game God of War: Ragnarök, earning a BAFTA nomination for that role. Now, he’s switching sides of Norse mythology to embody Kratos, the series’ central figure and one of gaming’s most recognizable characters.

Kratos Spartan by birth and a god by nature is known for his brutal journey from vengeance-driven killer to reluctant father. The upcoming series is expected to draw heavily from the narrative of the more recent games, focusing on Kratos’s evolving relationship with his son, Atreus.

Production and Creative Team

The adaptation has been in development for several years and received a two-season order ahead of filming. It’s being shepherded by showrunner Ronald D. Moore (known for Battlestar Galactica and Outlander), with Frederick E.O. Toye set to direct the first episodes. Pre-production is underway, and principal photography is expected to begin in Vancouver in 2026.

Although a premiere date hasn’t been announced yet, this casting marks a key milestone for the series and gives fans their first concrete look at who will helm the long-anticipated adaptation.

Fan Reaction and Expectations

Reaction online has already begun rolling in. Many fans on social media and forums are buzzing over the choice some applauding Hurst’s deep connection to the franchise and physical presence, others noting the unusual twist of casting the same actor who once played Thor as Kratos. It’s a decision that’s sure to spark conversation in gaming and TV communities alike as development progresses.

With this casting news, Prime Video’s God of War series moves a big step closer to reality, ushering one of gaming’s fiercest heroes into live action. Stay tuned for more updates as additional cast members and a release window are revealed.
