Kathleen Kennedy Steps Down as George Lucas Protégé Dave Filoni, Exec Lynwen Brennan Take Over Lucasfilm

Kathleen Kennedy Steps Down as Lucasfilm President; Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan Take the Helm

In a major shake-up for one of Hollywood’s most iconic entertainment studios, Kathleen Kennedy has stepped down as president of Lucasfilm after nearly 14 years leading the company responsible for the Star Wars franchise. Her departure marks a significant transition for the galaxy far, far away, as longtime Lucasfilm creative Dave Filoni and executive Lynwen Brennan assume leadership roles.

Kennedy, a legendary producer appointed by George Lucas and who guided Star Wars through its modern Disney era, will shift from executive leadership to full-time producing. She will remain actively involved with upcoming projects including the theatrical film The Mandalorian and Grogu, set for release in May 2026, and Star Wars: Starfighter, slated for 2027.

New Leadership for a New Era

Taking over the studio’s creative direction, Dave Filoni has been named President and Chief Creative Officer of Lucasfilm. A protégé of George Lucas himself, Filoni has been central to the franchise’s expansion into television, with credits that include Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, The Mandalorian and Ahsoka. Under his leadership, Lucasfilm is expected to continue bridging animated and live-action storytelling.

Joining Filoni in leadership, Lynwen Brennan will serve as Co-President of Lucasfilm. Brennan brings decades of experience within the Lucasfilm family  including leadership roles at Industrial Light & Magic and management of Lucasfilm’s business operations  and is known for her strategic vision and industry recognition.

Legacy and Future

Kennedy’s tenure oversaw a period of expansive Star Wars storytelling, including blockbuster films such as The Force Awakens and Rogue One, and the critically acclaimed streaming universe on Disney+. While her era brought immense commercial success, it also faced divided reactions from segments of the fanbase, especially around certain theatrical releases.

Disney executives praised Kennedy’s stewardship in a statement, highlighting her role in growing Star Wars into a multibillion-dollar cultural phenomenon and launching new creative avenues for the franchise. As Lucasfilm enters this new chapter under Filoni and Brennan’s leadership, fans and industry watchers alike will be watching closely to see how the future of the Star Wars saga unfolds.

What’s Next?

With Filoni focusing on creative vision and Brennan steering business operations, the leadership is poised to guide Lucasfilm through its next phase, which includes a mix of theatrical films, streaming series and expanded universe initiatives. Kennedy’s legacy as a driving force behind Star Wars over the past decade will remain influential even as fresh perspectives shape the path ahead.
